ദ ഗ്രേറ്റ് ഹാക്ക് - നമ്മുടെ നാളെ ആരുടെ കയ്യിൽ?

Data is new fuel എന്നത് എത്രത്തോളം ശരിയാണെന്ന് തെളിയിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഡോക്യുമന്ററിയാണ് 'ദ ഗ്രേറ്റ് ഹാക്ക്'. മനുഷ്യാവകാശം എന്നത് പോലെ ഡാറ്റാ റൈറ്റ്സും ഭാവിയിൽ എത്ര പ്രാധാന്യം അർഹിക്കുന്നതാവും എന്നും ഈ ഡോക്യു നമുക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കി തരുന്നു. എന്റെയും നിങ്ങളുടെയും ഡാറ്റാ എങ്ങനെയാണ് കേംബ്രിഡ്ജ് അനലിറ്റിക പോലുള്ള കമ്പനികൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് ( നമ്മുടെ സമ്മതം ഇല്ലാതെ) എന്നത് വളരെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു വിഷയമാണ്. വെറും 70000 അമേരിക്കകാരെ ഇൻഫ്ളുൻസ് ചെയ്തിട്ടാണ് അമേരിക്കയില പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഇലക്ഷൻ കേംബ്രിഡ്ജ് അനലിറ്റിക ട്രംപിന് അനുയോജ്യമായ രീതിയിൽ മാറ്റി മറിച്ചത് എന്നറിയുമ്പോൾ നമുക്ക് അത്ഭുതം തോന്നാം, പക്ഷേ ഇങ്ങനെയുള്ളവരാണ് ലോകത്ത് എവിടെയുമുള്ള ഇലക്ഷനിലെയും decisive factor എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത് (അങ്ങോട്ടും ചായാം, ഇങ്ങോട്ടും ചായാം). ഇവരെ data manipulation വഴി കണ്ടെത്തി, നമുക്ക് ആവശ്യമായ രീതിയിൽ അവർക്ക് ഡാറ്റാ ഫീഡ് ചെയ്ത് അവരുടെ behaviour pattern മാറ്റുകയും അതുവഴി അവരുടെ decision making ഇൻഫ്ളുഫൻസ് ചെയ്യുകയുമാണ് CA പോലുള്ള കമ്പനികൾ ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഈ കഴിഞ്ഞ ഇലക്ഷിനിലും ഇങ്ങനെ നടന്നില്ല എന്ന് ആരു കണ്ടു. എനിക്ക് അടുത്തറിയാവുന്ന ആൾക്കാർ, അവരുടെ വോട്ട് ആർക്ക് കൊടുക്കണമെന്ന തീരുമാനങ്ങൾ അവർക്ക് കിട്ടിയ FB യിലെയും WhatsAppലെയും ഫോർവേർഡുകളാണ് നിശ്ചയിച്ചത്. അവരുടെ ബിഹേവിയറും തിങ്കിംഗ് പാറ്റേണും റൈറ്റ് വിംഗ് പൊളിറ്റിക്സിലോട്ട് മാറിയത് പഠനത്തിന് വിഷയമാക്കേണ്ട കാര്യം തന്നെയാണ്. സുക്കർ അണ്ണനും കോയും എന്റെ ഡാറ്റ അടിച്ച് മാറ്റുണ്ടെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കി തന്നെയാണ് ഞാൻ ഇത് എഴുതുന്നത്. ലോകത്തിന്റെ നാനാഭാഗത്തിൽ നിന്നുമുള്ള ആൾക്കാരുടെ ഇപെടൽ ഉണ്ടായില്ലെങ്കിൽ വലിയ ഒരു ഭവിഷ്യത്തിനെ ആയിരിക്കും നാം വരും വർഷങ്ങളിൽ വരവേൽക്കാൻ പോകുന്നത്! ദുർഭാഗ്യവശാൽ ഡാറ്റാ പ്രൈവസിയ്ക്ക് ഒരു ഉത്തരം തരാൻ ഈ ഡോക്യുമൻററിക്ക് കഴിയാതെ പോകുന്നു, മറ്റാരു ഭാഷയിൽ പറഞ്ഞാൽ സൊലൂഷൻ ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരു പ്രോബളമാണ് ഇത്! #TheGreatHack #Netflix #Data ജൂലയ് 29, 2019

മതം മാറ്റത്തിന്റെ സോഫ്റ്റ് ടാർഗറ്റുകൾ!

 ഞാൻ ഇത് തുടങ്ങുന്നതിന് മുമ്പേ ഒരു ഡിസ്ക്ളൈമർ കൂടി കൂട്ടി ചേർക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു. ഇതിനെ വർഗ്ഗീയവത്ക്കരിക്കരുത്.  കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ട് മൂന്ന് നാളുകളിൽ മതം മാറ്റലിന്റെ (ഹിന്ദു മതത്തിൽ നിന്ന് പെന്തകോസ്തൽ മതത്തിന്റെ പല വിംഗ് കളിലേക്ക് ) വികൃതമായ രൂപങ്ങൾ ഞാൻ കാണാനിടയായി. യുക്തിപരമായി ചിന്തിക്കാനോ വിശകലനമോ ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയാതെ എന്തെങ്കിലും മാനസിക  പിരിമുറുക്കങ്ങളിൽ കൂടി കടന്നു പോകുന്ന ലോല ഹൃദയരായ സ്ത്രീകളായിരിക്കും ഈ പരിവർത്തന ദല്ലാൾമാരുടെ ഇരകൾ. (ഒരാൾ എന്ത് വിശ്വസിക്കണം എന്ത് വേണ്ട എന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കേണ്ടത് അയാളുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യമാണ് എന്നുള്ളത് ഞാൻ മറക്കുന്നില്ല!). ഒരിക്കൽ ഈ ഇരകൾ  ഈ ദല്ലാൾമാരുടെ ചൂണ്ടയിൽ കൊത്തിയാൽ പിന്നെ മൾട്ടി ലെവൽ മാർക്കറ്റിംഗ് സ്ട്രാറ്റജിയിൽ ചൂണ്ടയിൽ വീണ ഇരയുടെ ഭർത്താവ്, അമ്മ, അമ്മായി അമ്മ, സഹോദരങ്ങൾ, സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ എന്നീ ലെവലിലേക്ക് ഇമോഷനൽ ബ്ലാക്ക് മെയിലിംഗിലൂടെ ദല്ലാൾമാരും ആദ്യ ഇരയും അവരുടെ പൊട്ട ഭക്തിയുടെ കരാള ഹസ്തങ്ങൾ അമർത്തും. പാസ്റ്ററും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് നാലണയ്ക്ക് ഉപയോഗവും 25 പൈസയുടെ വിവരവും ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരിനം ജീവി ഇവരുടെ ഇടയിൽ ഉണ്ട് . സമയവും സന്ദർഭവും നോക്കാതെ ഇവന്മാർ അവരുടെ ഇവാഞ്ചലിസം പ്രൊപ്പഗേറ്റ് ചെയ്യാൻ നോക്കും, അത് ആശുപത്രി വരാന്തയിൽ അത്യാസന്ന ഘട്ടത്തിൽ കഴിയുന്ന രോഗിയുടെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുക്കളോട് ആകാം, മരണ വീട്ടിലെ ദു:ഖത്തിൽ ആണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ആൾക്കാരോട് ആകാം, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ജീവിതത്തിൽ മറ്റേതെങ്കിലും ആപത്ത് ഘട്ടങ്ങൾ തരണം ചെയ്തവരോട് ആകാം) ഇന്നലെ ഇത് പോലെ ഒരനുഭവം എന്റെ ഒരു സുഹൃത്തിനുണ്ടായി. മാനസികപരമായി തകർന്നിരിക്കുന്ന എന്റെ ഒരു സുഹൃത്തിനെ ആശുപത്രി വരാന്തയിൽ വച്ച് ലവൻ മാമോദിസ മുക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു. എനിക്ക് ഈ പാസ്റ്റർ മാരോട് ഒന്നേ പറയാനുള്ളു. നിങ്ങൾ നിങ്ങളുടെ പരിവർത്തനങ്ങൾ സ്വതന്ത്രമായി നിങ്ങളുടെ ആരാധാനലയങ്ങളിൽ നടത്തിക്കോളൂ. പക്ഷേ എന്തിനാണ് നിങ്ങൾ മാർക്കറ്റിംഗ് എക്സിക്യൂട്ടിവുകളെപ്പോലെ ഓടി നടന്ന് അസ്ഥാനത്ത് നിങ്ങളുടെ വിശ്വാസം മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ മേൽ അടിച്ചേൽപ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത്? പിന്നെ എനിക്ക് പറയാനുള്ളത് ഈ പാസ്റ്ററുമാരെ വീട്ട് പടിക്കൽ കയറ്റുന്ന ഒന്നാം തല മുറ കൺവെർട്ടഡ് പെർവർട്ടഡ് വിശ്വാസികളെയാണ്, നിങ്ങൾ വിശ്വാസിയായി എന്ന് കരുതി നിങ്ങളുടെ കൂടെയുള്ളവരെയും ആ പടുകുഴിയിൽ തള്ളിയിടരുത്, പ്ലീസ്.

Education, Creativity, and Profession!

This is the time of academic results. I have seen a lot of advertisements by educational institutions and news about students who scored higher marks (in fact few missed by two or three marks to get the full marks). What I noticed is our education is still a factory which tries to hatch more engineers, doctors, CAs, and Software Professionals! Don't we need any other profession in this world? Yes we do! If we have a problem with our electric cable, we need an electrician, if there is some problem with water supply, we need a plumber to rectify it, if we want to relax in the evening we might need to go to a movie/theatre/concert, so don't we need actors, artists, and singers? 

Unfortunately, most of the people who are working in the above mentioned profession are people who might have failed drastically in the current education system or people who escaped from the system where their parents and teachers tried to inject the wrong 'medicine' upon them! All of you know how difficult it is to get a plumber, electrician, carpenter...you name it!

Of course we need 'good' engineers and doctors and at the same time we need good teachers, policemen, politicians, cartoonists, journalists, sports personalities etc etc. But how good is our education in delivering all these materials?! 

Do our education kills creativity? I have seen one of Ken Robinson's TED talk regarding the same subject. Unfortunately our schools/education kill creativity of most of the students! We cannot blame teachers. Unfortunately they are only a cog in the wheel of this education system which has been started in the 19th century to cater the manpower need of industrial revolution ! Fortunately in the recent times, there has been a lot of thinking and effort has been put on to revive our education system but that is not enough.

കളിചിരി മറന്നു പോയ പ്രായം!

അടുത്തിടെ 43 വയസ്സ് പ്രായമുള്ള ഒരാളെ പരിചയപ്പെട്ടു. സംസാരിച്ചു വന്നപ്പോൾ അറിയാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു പുള്ളിക്കാരന് പ്രമേഹ രോഗമാണെന്ന്. ഞാൻ കൂടുതൽ കാര്യങ്ങൾ അറിയാൻ വേണ്ടി ചോദിച്ച കൂട്ടത്തിൽ പുള്ളിക്കാരന് രണ്ട് മക്കൾ ഉണ്ടെന്നും അറിയാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു ( ഒരാണും ഒരു പെണ്ണും ). പുള്ളി വിവാഹത്തിന് മുൻപ് വരെ വ്യായമം ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രകൃതക്കാരനായിരുന്നു. ക്രിക്കറ്റ്, വോളിബോൾ, കബഡി എന്നീ കളികളിലും പുള്ളി പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നു. കല്ല്യാണ ശേഷം പുള്ളി തന്റെ പഴയ ചങ്ങാത്തമെല്ലാം ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് തികച്ചും ഒരു 'ഉത്തരവാദിത്തമുള്ള' ഗൃഹനാഥനായി മാറി. പുള്ളി ഇപ്പോൾ എന്തെങ്കിലും വ്യായാമം ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചു. അതിന് കിട്ടിയ ഒരു ഉത്തരം സമയമില്ല എന്നുള്ളതായിരുന്നു. ഞാൻ പുള്ളിയോട് പ്ലസ് വൺ പഠിക്കുന്ന മകളുടെ കൂടെയോ എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗ് പഠിക്കുന്ന മകന്റെ കൂടെയോ എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് ബാഡ്മിൻറനോ ക്രിക്കറ്റോ കളിക്കാത്തത് എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചു. "അതിന്റെയൊക്കെ പ്രായം കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലേ", "നാട്ടുകാർ എന്ത് പറയും'' എന്നുള്ള മറുപടികൾ എന്നിക്ക് കിട്ടി.

എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നത് ഈ അണ്ഡകടാഹത്തിൽ ഒരു പ്രായം കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ 'കുട്ടികളികൾ ' അപ്പാടെ നിർത്തുന്ന ഒരു സ്പീഷിസ് നമ്മൾ മനുഷ്യരായിരിക്കും. കുട്ടികാലത്തിൽ നമ്മൾ കാണിക്കുന്ന കുസൃതികളും കുട്ടികളികളും ചാടി മറിയലും ഡാൻസ് കളിക്കുന്നതും മൂളിപ്പാട്ട് പാടുന്നതും ഓടുന്നതും ചാടുന്നതും നമ്മൾ 'പ്രായപൂർത്തി' ആയ ഉടൻ തന്നെ നമ്മളും നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹവും അതിന് വിലക്ക് കൽപ്പിക്കുന്നു. 

കുട്ടികൾ, പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും പത്ത് വയസ്സിന് താഴെയുള്ള, പലപ്പോഴും കുസൃതികളിൽ ഏർപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്. ചില മാതാപിതാക്കളും അദ്ധ്യാപകരും അതൊരു പ്രശ്നമായികണ്ട് തടയിടാറുണ്ട് (ഹൈപ്പർ ആക്ടീവ് കുട്ടികളെ ഇതിൽ നിന്ന് ഒഴിവാക്കുന്നു). ഇങ്ങനെ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോൾ അവൻ കൂടുതൽ വാശിക്കാരനാകാനുള്ള ചാൻസ് കൂടുതലാണ്. അവന്റെ പ്രോബളം സോൾവിംഗ് സ്കിൽസ് നന്നാക്കാനും ചിലപ്പോൾ ഈ വികൃതികൾ സാധിച്ചു എന്ന് വരാം (ഇവിടെ ആവശ്യം മുതിർന്നവരുടെ സൂപ്പർവിഷൻ മാത്രമാണ്). എനിക്ക് ഓർമ്മ വരുന്നത് എന്റെ ഒരു സുഹൃത്തിനെയാണ്. കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് അവനെ അവന്റെ അമ്മ പുറത്തേക്ക് കളിക്കാനോ കൂട്ടുകൂടാനോ വിടില്ലായിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ സോഷ്യൽ സ്കിൽസിൽ അവൻ വളരെ പിറകിലാണ്. 

ഒരു പ്രായം കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ 'മസ്സിൽ ' പിടിച്ചാണ് ജീവിക്കേണ്ടത് എന്ന നിയമം അലിഖിതമായി എഴുതി വച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിലാണ് നാം ജീവിക്കുന്നത്. അത് ശരിയാണോ? മുൻപ് സൂചിപ്പിച്ചത് പോലെ മനുഷ്യവർഗ്ഗം മാത്രമാണ് ഈ ഒരു ലൈനിൽ മാറിപ്പോയത്. നമ്മൾ കുസൃതികൾ മറക്കുന്നു, കളിചിരികൾ മറക്കുന്നു, നമുക്ക് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട വിനോദങ്ങൾ മറക്കുന്നു, എന്നിട്ട് നമ്മൾ 'മനുഷ്യമൃഗമായി' ജീവിക്കുന്നു. 

മുതിർന്നവരും കുട്ടികളികളും അവർക്കിഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട വിനോദങ്ങളിലും വ്യായാമത്തിലും (sports activities) ഏർപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ അവർക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്ന benefits എന്താണെന്ന് ഈ വീഡിയോ കണ്ടു നോക്കുമ്പോൾ നമുക്ക് മനസ്സിലാകും!

യുക്തിവാദിയുടെ മതം!

 

ഒരു യുക്തിവാദി ആയിരിക്കുന്നത് എത്ര ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുള്ള കാര്യം ആണെന്ന് ഒരു യുക്തിവാദി യോട്  ചോദിച്ചാൽ മാത്രമെ അറിയൂ. എന്തെന്നാൽ ദൈവം ഉണ്ടെന്നു വാദിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് തെളിവുകൾ ആവശ്യം ഇല്ല. തെക്കേടത്തെ ശാരദയും വടക്കേടത്തെ ഉണ്ണി പിള്ളയും പറയുന്നത് കേട്ട് അപ്പാടെ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവരുടെ ഇടയിൽ ഒരു യുക്തിവാ ദിക്ക്  പൊതുവെ ജീവിതം അസഹ്യം ആയിരിക്കും, പ്രതേകിച്ചു വിഷയങ്ങളെ മനസിലാക്കാതെ വെറും ബാഹ്യമായ കാര്യങ്ങളെ മാത്രം വിശകലനം ചെ യ്യു ന്ന  കൂപമണ്ടൂകങ്ങൾ ഉള്ള നാട്ടിൽ ! ഇവറ്റകളെ പറഞ്ഞു മനസിലാക്കാം എന്ന് കരുതിയാൽ, അവർ നമുക്ക് ഒരു ജാതിയും വർഗ്ഗവും മതവും ദൈവത്തെയും ഉണ്ടാക്കി വരെ തരികയും ചെയ്യും! യുക്തിവാദികൾക്ക്  അമ്പ ല നടയിൽ പ്രവേശം ഇല്ല എന്ന് കൂടി ഇവറ്റകൾ എഴുതി വയ്ക്കാൻ ഉള്ള സാഹചര്യങ്ങൾ വളരെ വിദൂരതയിൽ അല്ല!

എന്നെ ഇത് എഴുതാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ച സന്ദർഭം:- നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലെ ഒരു ആചാരം ആണല്ലോ "ചോറൂണ്". നവജാത ശിശുവിന് 5 മാസം തികയുമ്പോൾ, നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലെ സമ്പ്രദായം വച്ച് ആ കുട്ടിക്ക് ചോറൂണ് ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒരു അമ്പലത്തിൽ വച്ച് കൊടുക്കും. ഞാൻ എന്റെ കുട്ടിക്ക് ഒരു ഉരുള ചോറ് ഒരു അമ്പലത്തിൽ വച്ച് കൊടുത്തപ്പോൾ ആണ് ചിലര്ക്ക് ഞെട്ടലും, കോരിത്തരിപ്പും, ഉണ്ടായത്!

ഒരു യുക്തിവാദി എന്ന നിലക്ക് ഈ നാട്ടുനടപ്പിൽ എനിക്ക് ഒരു യുക്തിയും കാണാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല. പക്ഷെ ഒരു യുക്തിവാദിയും ഒരു തീവ്രവാദി ആകാൻ പാടില്ല എന്ന് കരുതുന്ന ഒരാള് ആണ് ഞാൻ.  ഒരു യുക്തിവാദി തന്റെ  വാദങ്ങൾ ആരുടെ മേലും അടിചെല്പ്പിക്കാൻ പാടില്ല എന്ന് കരുതുന്ന ഒരാള് ആണ് ഞാൻ.  യുക്തിവാദി എപ്പോളും  (അന്ധ)വിശ്വാസികൾക്ക്  വഴി കാണിക്കാൻ മാത്രമേ ശ്രമിക്കാവൂ . അവരെ വഴി പിടിപ്പിച്ചു നടത്താൻ ശ്രമിച്ചാൽ, യുക്തിവാദിയും വിശ്വാസിയും തമ്മിൽ ഒരു വ്യത്യാസവും ഇല്ലാതെ വരും. ഒരു വിശ്വാസിയുടെ യുക്തിയിലോട്ടുള്ള സഞ്ചാരം സ്വപ്രേരിതം ആകുന്നതാണ് എപ്പോഴും നല്ലത്. എങ്കിൽ മാത്രമേ അതിനു ശാശ്വതമായ ഒരു അടിത്തറ ഉണ്ടാകുള്ളൂ. 

ഈ കാരണങ്ങളാൽ ഞാൻ ഒരിക്കലും എന്റെ സഹധർമണിയെയോ, എന്റെ കുടുംബത്തെയോ ഞാൻ നിർബദ്ധപൂർവ്വം  ഒരു 'മത പരിവർത്തനം'  നടത്തി 'യുക്തിവാദത്തിലേക്ക്" നയിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടില്ല! അവർ വന്നാൽ സന്തോഷം, വന്നില്ലേൽ പ്രശ്നവും ഇല്ല. വീണ്ടും ഇവിടെ ആണ് ഒരു യുക്തിവാദി ഒരു മത തീവ്രവാധിയെക്കൾ  നിരുപദ്രവകാരി ആകുന്നത് .  പക്ഷെ ഒരു "ചൊരപ്പും" ഇല്ലാത്ത നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹത്തിന് അത് ഒരു വാർത്ത  ആയി  മാറുകയും, എന്തിനാണ് സുരേഷ് അമ്പലത്തിൽ  പോയി എന്നുള്ള ചോദ്യം ഉയരുകയും ചെയിതു. എന്റെ ചോദ്യം ഇതാണ് - എന്തെ ഒരു യുക്തിവാധിക്ക് വേറെ  ഏതു  സ്ഥലത്തിൽ പോകുന്നതും പോലെ  ഒരു അമ്പലത്തിൽ  പോകാൻ പാടില്ലേ? അതോ അവിടെ അധകൃതനെ വിലക്കും  പോലെ സത്യത്തെ അന്വേഷിക്കുന്ന  യുക്തിവാധിക്കും അമ്പലത്തിന്റെ പുറത്തു നിൽക്കേണ്ടി വരുമോ ? ഞാൻ ഒരു താലി ബാൻ  നാട്ടിലാണോ ജീവിക്കുന്നത് എന്നുകൂടി എനിക്ക് തോന്നി പോയി. ഒരു വിധത്തിൽ  പറഞ്ഞാൽ  യുക്തിവാധിക്ക് പുതിയ ഒരു മതത്തിന്റെ ലേ ബൽ  തരും പോലെ ആയി പോയി ഇത്!

Empty vessels make the most noise – Doctors Vs Neeya Naana !

'Neeya Naana' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neeya_Naana) is a very famous program in Vijay TV which attracts a lot of people because of its presentation style (credit goes to Mr. Gopinath) and the subjects it discuss. Last week's (on 17/08/2014) episode created a lot of irk among the doctor fraternity in Tamilnadu. This particular episode discussed about doctors' clinical practice style in the current scenario. As usual there was a lot of annoyed audience (read patients) on the audience panel and they raised very valid questions to the doctors' panel in the program. Most of the doctors failed to convince the audience. The anchor also cross questioned some doctors regarding their ethical practice (please watch the episode http://www.tamiltwist.com/2014/08/neeya-naana-17-08-2014-vijay-tv-debate-show/ ). I also felt most of the questions taken up by the audience were valid and as public servants doctors were supposed to answer there queries, but most of them failed in their task.

After the telecast of the show, the entire doctor fraternity (except good doctors) got screwed up and IMA made their statement clear by asking all the doctor fraternity to lodge complaint against Vijay TV to Indian Broadcasting Foundation (ibfindia.com).

As a common man I have got a lot of doubts regarding doctor's commitment towards society;

Students who comes out with flying clolors in plus-two examinations and medical entrance tests, when asked about their future plans, will tell "I want to become a doctor and wants to serve our society especially poor"! But these same students will protest against the government's policy of compulsory one-year rural service. If at all they opt for the rural service, most of the doctors won't be available in the hospitals and primary health centers in villages!

I personally know a lot of parents who works really 'hard' to make their son/daughter a doctor. Their main motive is to get a 'elite status' for their son/daughter in the society and a ' great price tag' in the marriage market. And of course, once they finish their study they will look forward to reap the benefits in many 'ways'! We cannot blame them because education now a days has became a sheer business where as a student if you invest a lot, you can reap a lot after completing your studies! So once they complete their study, it will be money-making time for them and they will do anything for that, starting from colluding with labs and scanning center to accepting gifts from pharma companies for pushing their products! I do remember in one debate similar to Neeya Naana in some other TV channel, a doctor was saying "if we won't accept the gifts from the pharma companies, some other guy will take it on behalf of ours"! Okay, that logic is well and good, but my simple request to people like them is to why do not you accept that gift from the pharma companies and contribute that to a poor patient's healthcare expense? Sounds like Robinhood theory...is not it ? But why they do not became Robinhood for the poor !

Days are gone where healthcare has been seen as a social service and non-profit sector. Now there are a lot of for-profit healthcare setups who publicly says we are here for making profit and sometimes giving service! Even that is the case, a hospital or a doctor is not permitted to loot a patient unethically.

Another thing really concerns me is the emotional temper of the new-gen doctors. Most of the new-gen doctors are short tempered and they think that once they became doctors they are the supreme powers. Their curriculum also teaches them not to be empathetic towards the patients and must see patients just like a 'sample study material'!

Two days back one of my friend visited a local doctor in Tirunelveli. While consulting, the doctor got a call from another patient. He was asking about some lab results' value after googling about it. Doctor answered his queries satisfactorily. Then the doctor told my friend that – "that fellow might have seen 'Neeya Naana' yesterday" ! My question is who made the doctor to think like that and what made the patient to search google for the lab results' validity!

Now about the doctor's protest against the Neeya Naana program. A few years back there was a Tamil movie called 'Ramana', starring actor-turned politician Vijayakant. In that movie, a lot of unethical practices of doctors have been shown very sarcastically. I did not see any protest from doctor's side or IMA against that particular movie at that time! Both the 'Ramana' movie and the 'Neeya Naana' talk show are made for infotainment purpose only. If that is the case why the doctor fraternity became frustrated only at this time?!

I have also seen doctors taking credit of the good things like a successful liver transplant, heart transplant, success of a complicated microsurgery etc. If they can take credit, why do not they take the responsibility of the unintentional outcomes of the treatment they does? It is very painful to say that a majority of the doctors are least concerned about answering the questions of the patients and their attenders. In any part of the world if you pay for a service, you will always expect proper accountability from the person/organization that gives you the service. If it is not delivered, customers will obviously become frustrated. So it is responsibility of the doctors to speak to the patients and convince them on their language and condole them if anything goes wrong!

In my opinion, doctors must introspect about their activities and understand what does really meant by 'service'. Instead of that if doctors' organizations like IMA, NHB etc starts witch hunting the whistle blowers who one way or other way managed to say that "king is naked", they must sit and discuss what really motivated poor patients to talk like that (TRP rate of the Vijay TV does not matter to the poor patient, he only wants correct diagnosis and treatment). It is also high time for the miscreant doctors to come up clean and take the patients into confidence, if not programs like 'Neeya Naana' might be conducted in the hospital itself, not by Mr. Gopinath but by the patients themselves! So my dear Doctors, Arise and Awake and stop not till the goal is reached !

VOTING EMPOWERMENT

Two days back I was campaigning for Aam Aadmi Party's Trivandrum Loksabha Candidate. As I was distributing party manifesto to the localites in the Devaswom Board Junction, Nanthacode I saw two ladies aged around 65-70 and I approached them and told them that I am from a new political party and we need your valuable votes to change the current system. Suddenly both ladies exploded at me and said - “During the last election you people promised us that we will give you drinking water, till now it has not arrived. You promised us about giving electricity, where is it? What about ration you have promised? Nothing happened and now you want our votes? Do not you have self respect to ask for vote from us!!”. They were very angry and their emotional outburst attracted nearby people which include auto-rickshaw drivers and people who came to the nearby milk shop. Just for a second I got stunned and nearby people were looking at me for my 'answer'! As I was not a seasoned election campaigner and a 'political worker (paid or unpaid)' and this is for the first time I was involving in a political party, this sort of experiences were new to me but somehow I got my orientation back and replied them - “I am not from the old political parties but from a new one, its name is Aam...” They did not even given me time to complete my reply, and once again they verbally attacked me - “Do not you feel ashamed to come in front of us. Everyone will come and take votes and vanish from this area and then after five years, they will come back to us begging for votes. We have been fooled by you for so many years, but this time we will not vote”.

Then I said - “Do not waste your votes, at least vote for NOTA”! Then one of the lady shouted at me - “We do not want him (NOTA) too, he will also be the same!” I was speechless. I wondered how I would make them understand what NOTA or 'None Of The Above' is. How important it is to cast vote in democracy. But our system have been failed since independence regarding educating people about what really democracy means and how important people's participation, at least casting vote, in democracy.

Election Commission (EC) and government will do some campaign during the election time regarding the importance of casting vote, but the rest of the years there will not be any kind of such activities from the EC or government. Virtually common citizen will not get empowered about their rights to cast vote and its power. This will benefit 'third-rate political parties and their political leaders' who does not want to see people get empowered.

We must come up with some out-of-the-box ideas which will make sure that each and every citizen in our country get empowered about their rights and understand the importance of voting in democracy irrespective of their caste, creed, sex, or social status. If this is not achieved, people will not understand what really voting is and even who understand will cast vote for a particular political party which they have been forced to believe upon but not for themselves and their future generation!
